These guides don't focus on how to grow specific types of veg, at the ideal time of year, there are thousands of books that tell you how to do that. Instead they describe how to grow each type of veg so that it's available every week of the year, or as close to that as we believe it worthwhile. Worthwhile is important to me, I don't want to put in a lot of effort and I don't want to spend any money on heating, I just want great food at no or low cost.
Achieving this year round objective means breaking some traditional rules, using spare warm corners of your house in winter and investing in covers for your crops. Everything described is easy to achieve though, practical in a day or two a week of effort and cost effective.
It's also a lot of fun, healthy and tasty.
This chapter is best read in conjunction with the preceding chapter that describes how the year round supply of fresh veg that this chapter delivers can contribute to a rich diet. You should also read the guides to growing under cover and polytunnel growing.
